Line Master Controller
Central Control for the Whole Press Line
The line master controller is the central control point of a robotic press line. In other words, it runs the whole line from one program. Specifically, it coordinates robot transfer, destacker centring, safety devices and the automatic tool changer. In addition, it collects monitoring and feedback signals from every station and sends them to production management.
Why a Press Line Needs a Central Controller
A tandem press line is not one machine. Instead, it is a chain of them: destacker, centring device, transfer robots, presses, tool changers and the end-of-line conveyor. Without a single controller, each unit runs on its own timing. As a result, the line moves only as fast as its worst handover. A central controller solves this. Because every station follows one program, parts move on a common cycle. Moreover, a fault anywhere stops the line safely instead of crashing a die.
Line Master Controller Specification
| Select robot program | Cycle time monitor |
| Select operation mode (Manual / Auto) | Automatic tool changer function |
| Start / stop system | Data edit program |
| Production cycle stop and clear all errors | Part clearing |
| Production record | System status on graphic display |
| Line monitor | Gripper ID control |
Operation and Monitoring
Operators work from a single panel. From there, they select the robot program and switch between manual and automatic mode. Meanwhile, the graphic display shows the running state of each station. As a result, a stoppage is traced in seconds rather than minutes. In addition, cycle time, production records and error history are logged. Finally, that data can be passed to the plant’s production management system.
Retrofit or New Line
A line master controller suits a new press line. However, it also fits an existing one. In that case, it replaces legacy controls whose spare parts are no longer available. As a rule, a retrofit costs a fraction of a new line. Furthermore, it brings the safety system up to current standards at the same time. For robot safety in press applications, the ISO 10218 standard applies.
